“All I can say is: If Senator Obama wants to sit down across the table from the leader of a country that calls Israel a stinking corpse, and comes to New York and says they're gonna, quote, ‘wipe Israel off the map,’ what is it that he wants to talk about? What is it that he wants to talk about with him?”
If it was John McCain he would likely tell them to cut out the “B.S.” According to the Huffington Post, McCain said in 2006, "One of the things I would do if I were President would be to sit the Shiites and the Sunnis down and say, 'Stop the b*&ls*i^.'"
We all know that this is not the type of foreign policy that McCain would pursue towards Iran. While on the campaign trail McCain was so enthused about the idea of bombing Iran that he turned it into a song.
McCain turned a popular beach boys song into “bomb bomb bomb bomb Iran…”
McCain clearly understands the deep religious and political divisions that exist between these two sects. I am sure no one ever thought of saying that and I am sure that his “strong words” would have a major impact in Iran and through out the area.
“One thing's for sure: McCain's brand of ‘Kindergarten Cop’ diplomacy is just the sort of thing that could have one yearning nostalgically for Bush's ‘Cowboy’ diplomacy,” Jason Linkins of the Huffington Post said.
McCain also has no problem with the idea of leaving our troops in Iraq for the next 100 years.
Iraq has diverted our attention away from Al Qaeda in Afghanistan and helped Al Qaeda recruit more terrorists making America less safe. This is the type of foreign policy that McCain supports and is trying to play off as the stronger position to have.
Kennedy used back channel talks with the Soviet Union during the Cuban missile crisis to end what could have led to a disastrous chain of events. President Regan held talks with Iran while in office and President Eisenhower warned of the growing influence of the military-industrial complex.
Abraham Lincoln once said, “Am I not destroying my enemies when I make friends of them?”
Obama has taken the position that it is in our best interest to open talks with countries like Iran. Obama has suggested meeting with them to discuss ending their nuclear ambitions and support of terrorism in exchange for economic investments and possible membership in the World Trade Organization.
These are things that would be very important to Iran if they wish to grow their economy in the international market. Obama believes we have no chance to make progress if we have no open lines of communication with them.
The United States only looks arrogant and Iran only grows more angry toward American interests in the Middle East when we refuse to meet with them.
Hopefully Americans are ready to get serious and think about what John McCain and Barack Obama are really saying when it comes to foreign policy. Do we want to continue to pursue a strike first mentality and continue to not talk to nations we disagree with?
Or do we want to try diplomacy in an effort to restore relationships and restore our image in the world. What is really scary is 4 or 8 more years of Bush style foreign policy that makes America more of a target to international terrorism.
