With the polls and momentum still in Obama's favor, Obama is also banking unprecedented endorsements. Two former Bush administration officials have recently endorsed Obama. A vast majority of national and state newspapers have endorsed Obama after supporting Bush in 2004.
The conservative Chicago Tribune which has never endorsed a Democratic candidate in their long history recently endorsed Obama.
Barack Obama is taking in newspaper endorsements by an almost three to one ratio over John McCain. On Thursday, The New York Times endorsed Senator Barack Obama.
The endorsement by The New York Times comes as no shock given John McCain's disdain for the paper and the recent Democratic endorsements the paper has made.
While newspaper endorsements usually have little impact on presidential races, in 2004 Bush won more of the important swing states where he had major newspaper endorsements.
McCain scored a big win this week by getting the endorsement of the Detroit News. Obama was endorsed by the Detroit Free Press the week before. Editor and Publisher, a journal covering the newspaper industry, puts the endorsement tally at 127-49 in Obama's favor.
In 2004, John Kerry barely edged out Bush with endorsements. In 2004, Kerry got 213 endorsements and Bush got 205.
27 newspapers have switched from Bush to Obama in 2008 while only 4 papers have switched from Kerry to McCain.
Since Sunday, two former Bush administration officials have endorsed Senator Obama. Former Secretary of State Colin Powell endorsed Obama Sunday on Meet the Press. On Thursday, Obama also scored the endorsement of alienated former press secretary Scott McClellan.
McClellan wrote a tell all book about his experience in the Bush White House and the Bush Administration did what they could to distance themselves from the former press secretary.
While McClellan maybe an outcast to the White House and Republicans, Colin Powell is still certainly respected by many. GOP crossover endorsements have been popular this election as moderate Republicans and even conservative Republicans grow tired of McCain's tactics.
With the election less than two weeks away there is very little going the way of John McCain. McCain needs more than endorsements but anything to show that people still have faith in him probably would not hurt.
Here is a list of which papers have endorsed candidates, some have chosen to stay out of the endorsement business. The list is from Editor and Publisher.com
(N)=No endorsement in 2004
